Globalchange
The redesign of globalchange.gov was a collaboration between 13 agencies, 2 design firms and countless stakeholders. Challenges ranged from project coordination / stakeholder management between agencies, to collaboration on design vision and implementation between design firms.
My Role & Activities
UX Lead | User research, interviews, business goal workshops, content audit, design brief, sketching, wireframing & HTML prototyping.
Problem
The old site suffered from the typical text-heavy, org-chart focused design of government websites. Information was hard to find and the site failed to provide context and transparency into Federal climate change research activities. Additionally, it was not an engaging experience for the non-technical, lay audience.
Solutions
-
Revamp the information architecture to provide task-based channels for key audiences.
-
Overhaul visual design and provide a more engaging experience by using high quality images from NASA and NOAA repositories.
-
Focus pages around key messages and themes to make the subject of climate change more comprehensible and consisent.
-
Provide context and transparency around research activities by connecting key resources with GCIS, a metadata information system shared between agencies that allows scientists to trace and attritube source information about their research.
